The second "Living Sculpture" show was just a week away and one of my featured artists had suddenly canceled. I was manager of Milam gallery, which had become fairly infamous for it’s annual Erotic Art Show every summer. A show that had grown beyond the simple art opening to become something of a beast.
A partial solution was that the Living Sculpture show had become a partial fund-raiser for the Erotic Art show. The basic idea was several artists would put paint to models, then place their living art in a setting of their own design. You, the public would come, (giving us a couple of bucks) to see the result.
The first year had been a big hit, but now I had an empty spot in the show. By some twisted providence I had just looked at an amusing portfolio left just that week by a new artist from South Beach, Florida, one Joseph Seeman.
The name alone was intriguing. The artwork was incredible. Bold, colorful images combining pop art, cartoons, childhood icons and extreme situations, very unique stuff. While at first timid about painting on flesh, he agreed to become the fourth artist in the show. Joey painted a 4’by 8’ panel, a new painting of a grinning red devil, then painted his girlfriend to match it. It was very well received and he basically saved my butt. He's been in many shows that I've curated since our first encounter and is currently showing at the Upstairs gallery.
In early 1996 Joseph Seeman moved to Dallas. Since then, he has been in the 5th Annual Erotic Art Show at Justine's Milam Gallery and several other group shows. June saw his first one-man show in Texas at the Forbidden Gallery, where his Demonic Portraiture show received critical reviews. This month has seen Joseph return to the style which has been his mainstay. His new erotic pieces can be seen at the Upstairs Gallery.
